About how do you make long distance relationships work

How do you make long distance relationships work?
I'm in love with a man named Carlos, but I'm in Pittsburgh until September and then I can move to Los Angeles with him.

Ever hear of the telephone? Long distance relationships usually don't work, over the long term. But you're only talking about six months. If you can't hold out for six months, you don't belong together.

About Why do law enforcement officers get off work to attend funerals of other police officers

Why do law enforcement officers get off work to attend funerals of other police officers?
I know if someone dies in my profession I do not get time off to attend the funeral. Why should the police be treated any differently. With most of the country's police force in Pittsburgh today it would seem that lawlessness would be on the increase because the police are off duty for the day.

because im sure at your job your not putting your life on the line everyday. That's why YOU don't get to take off work. When an agency loses one of there officers...that's a BIG deal because they were doing it for the safety of others. Its out of respect dude.
2 :
Police officers are a brotherhood and the death of one officer affects the entire force. Not every police officer is at the funeral, obviously that wouldn't make sense.
3 :
you can't get off work for a funeral? Man, that sucks. Every single job I ever had would let me not come to work for a funeral....and weddings and doctors appointments, etc......
4 :
Ok first of all, they are not off. They are one way or another standing in as a police officer in full uniform representing their dept. So they are not off as you say. And most of the time the officer attends while he is on duty, or on his day off. Secondly, there are enough cops on duty to cover the streets.
5 :
I assure you, all of them don't want to be there...
6 :
There are tens of thousands of Law Enforcement Officers in the country. The vast majority of us are not attending any funerals of our brother and sister Law Officers today. In fact some of us were already scheduled to be off and can do whatever we want on our off days. A small percentage of us are granted leave to do things, like attending funerals on a first come first serve basis. The agency comes first over leave requests. If the Captain decides he/she can't allow you off in order to maintain patrol coverage then they won't grant the leave request. The number of us that actually took off today to go to a funeral is a small percentage compared to the number of us that are working. Back in 2001 a High Point (NC) Officer was killed in a car crash. Greensboro Police actually volunteered to come and work the streets of High Point NC on their off day so every High Point Officer could attend the funeral that wanted to. Police Officers look at one another as a type of extended family that is why we go to funerals of strangers and mourn the loss of people we have never met as if they were good friends.
7 :
The question has been answered very well by previous posters. I want to take a moment to just say how sad I feel whenever I read a post like this. This sadness will last less than a few minutes however because I then realize there are many more people that "get" it.. that understand the sacrifices officers give to help keep even the poster of this question safe. And when an officer loses his or her life doing the job they were hired to do, they deserve respect, not some moron asking why other officers get off work to attend their funeral.
8 :
They should be treated different, because their job is different. They go to work everyday, not knowing if they will come home or not. As far as the part about lawlessness, I know that in my community when an officer is killed, officers and dispatchers from meighboring cities come and work for them.
9 :
Do you get time off if a family member dies? That's what a fallen officer is to other officers. A family member. Chances are if they take off for the funeral, their shift has been covered by someone else. It's called respect.
10 :
Number one most of the countries police force was not in Pittsburgh. it looks like a lot but like any civilian estimating blood loss it is not a lot. Officers from out side units come in on their own time to help the locals with policing. In most places officers are allowed to earn compensatory time instead of pay for overtime work. That is when they are overtime at work or in court they get a promise that they can take that time off later. Officers who are scheduled to be on duty and need to attend a funeral can take that compensatory time off as long as they find a volunteer to fill there need for working police. In situations like Pittsburgh there are plenty of sworn outside officers who volunteer so that their comrades can attend. I do not know what your profession is but I am sorry that your people have not had the intelligence over the years worked out a system allowing you to grieve and show respect. Or perhaps your profession does not see their people killed on a regular basis.

try washington state
2 :
are you talking building buildings(construction) or construction crews on roadways and parking areas? the roadways would be states that have warm and cold climate...roads go bad quicker due to freeze/thaw.
3 :
Lets see -- there is shovel apprentice -- then there is board nailer apprentice --- machine oil/grease apprentice --- flagman apprentice --- You might have to go to school cause I think all of the illegal aliens are already spoken for those jobs and are currently in training. Why don't you look for plumber or electrician apprentice.(.IBEW union.).. Int Brotherhood of Electrical Workers...
4 :
My Dad used to do construction, Flagger. He worked between Trucking,Arizona winter and Flagger, Nevada summer. Nevada has a saying, "we have two seasons, winter and construction." You might want to search for that in google.

About What is the best place to work with an employee discount that can be applied in planning your wedding

What is the best place to work with an employee discount that can be applied in planning your wedding?
Like.. if you work at a hotel do you get discounts on renting and having an event there? What if you worked on a small cruise ship like the Gateway Clipper Fleet in Pittsburgh? Or a bridal boutique? What job would have the most perks that would make planning a nice wedding cheaperrrr?

what a great question...I dont think you get dscounts at hotel spaces or at caterers, whoch are probably the biggest expenses. So, maybe a flower shop? Tough one. Sound like you need messapy. check out messapy.com, you might get some good free advice there.
2 :
well your dresses will be the most expensive part of the wedding and the most importance you will have pic in them so you will never forget that so i would say a bridal boutique
3 :
My sister worked for Marriott as a Hospitality Manager. Her wedding venue was free at any Marriott resort, the guests stayed for free and her honeymoon resort was free if she chose to stay in a Marriott property. She paid for the food, musicians, etc but the venue itself (Sawgrass Marriot in Florida) was free for her and her guests. That was an awesome deal! I have another friend who works at David's Bridal and gets big discounts on dresses but that's only good if you're in a wedding. Another friend worked at a florist for awhile and she paid wholesale for any flowers she purchased, which would also be a good deal. I don't know about anything else like catering or stationary. Good luck!
4 :
The most perks would definitely be at the hotel/banquet hall. You could get a cheaper venue. No matter where you go you negotiate the price you pay per person, so if you work there, I'm sure they give you the best services for your money.
5 :
most palces like that dont offer discounts to regular emplyees for weddings. Maybe a discount at a dress shop but a hotel wont give you a discount on food or a hall.
6 :
Getting a job somewhere just to save some money on a wedding might not be a good idea. Think long term. If you don't have much money, then down size the wedding or wait and save some up.
7 :
Well, the biggest expenses are usually catering and photography. Get a job there and that can cut down A LOT of your cost. For instance, my aunt had a catering business that I worked in while I was a teenager. She catered my wedding for cost of food only. A friend from high school went on to become a professional photographer and she gave me a great deal on the photos.

3 :
Pittsburgh? What is there. Go to the big cities such as LA, NY, Chicago, Boston or Philly.
4 :
I have to speak up for Pittsburgh here.. Our city is becoming headquarters for several high tech businesses.. Bayer is here.. US Steel, Bombardier, Bettis, many avaiation companies..... We also have a rich cultural center, museums, opera, theater, sports teams... Try it, you might like it.
5 :
What kind of employment? Knowing that would help someone to answer this question. Are you a professional? A Canadian citizen without a TN visa can apply at a U.S. port of entry with all of the following: Request for admission under TN status to Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. immigration officer; Employment Letter - Evidence of professional employment. See Employment Letter below; Proof of professional qualifications, such as transcripts of grades, licenses, certificates, degrees, and/or records of previous employment; Proof of ability to meet applicable license requirements; Proof of Canadian citizenship- Canadian citizens may present a passport, as visas are not required, or they may provide secondary evidence, such as a birth certificate. However, Canadian citizens traveling to the United States from outside the Western Hemisphere are required to present a valid passport at the port-of-entry; Fee of U.S. $50 If you don't qualify under NAFTA, then you'd need to be the beneficiary of an approved petition.

Go Steelers. Pittsburgh is a really tough market right now. If you want to get into life insurance sales, you're better off getting your license, and working for an independent agent (straight commission). I lived there for 10 years, I know a bunch of them. Email me for contact info.

About with which branch of engineering will i have the best chance of finding a job

with which branch of engineering will i have the best chance of finding a job?
i am a junior in high school and i want to study engineering in college. i would like to get i job right out of college without worrying about living with my parents for the rest of my life. which branch of engineering is most in need of workers nowadays? i live in Pittsburgh and my preference would be to work in the Pittsburgh area. Thanks.

Probably mechanical or electrical.
2 :
mechanical engineering is more like pittsburgh
3 :
http://pittsburgh.about.com/od/employers/Major_Pittsburgh_Employers_Companies.htm Seems steel, clothing, glass. gas, oil, lumber. Lots of heavy stuff that needs to move around as cheap as possible. Call up some local employers and ask. Occupational outlook handbook give national projections. Starkist don't want engineers with good taste and fancy diplomas, Starkist wants engineers that taste good and get the job done.
4 :
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all accurately predict the future, and have everything go just as we want them to go? But then, there'd be no interesting turns in life that lead to discovery and advancement. The engineering job market is cyclical. Regardless of the discipline, there might not be a lot of jobs in 6 to 8 years when you graduate, or there could be a big demand for new grads. It's been that way for at least 50 years. If you hit a "low spot", restricting your job search to Pittsburgh (or any one city or state) might mean you take a job at Wendy's. If you are willing to move a little (to, say, WV, or KY or OH), you might have a choice of jobs. I graduated when there was a big demand, but a couple of my classmates didn't get a job because they limited there acceptable locations to 2 or 3 counties. Employers often want to hire people who are at least willing to consider moving a little.

Anyone have ideas for 15 year old to work?
I need a job for next summer, and I need some ideas. NO! I am not working at a fast food joint, I get along with most people. but some make me mad. 6 :
You can make pretty good money mowing lawns and doing landscaping. Or maybe lifeguarding, but I don't know what the age limitations are in Pennsylvania.
7 :
babysit some kids that works for me, or yard work
8 :
I worked in a nursing home kitchen. I washed dishes and did light food prep. Those sort of places usually pay better than your typical fast-food or cashier job. I made $9.00 as opposed to the $6.50 I made at Wendys.
9 :
its hard growing up and most the time it sucks. but if you need the job trust me you'll take it and no one says you have to stay there forever or even take the job on the interview. just put in all kinds of applications most of them wont even call you back. least you did your part in tryin to find one.
10 :
Mail room, grocery store bag-boy, hardware store.
11 :
Do something that you can do for cash. My cousins are 15 and 13. They started a general services company. They just put up fliers in nice neighborhoods advertising clean-up, lawn care etc. and they make bank. They deal in cash only and one of them got hooked up to watch an older couples' house for the summer for $500. Don't think that to work means that you have to have a boss. Be your own boss and you get to keep all your money!
12 :
Do you need a work permit? If so, I would check into that too. If you work with the public, you will run into some rude and inconsiderate people. You will need to prepare for that. No matter where you work, there will be nasty people. There are nice people, too. (hopefully!) Your options may be limited if you can't get a work permit. You may want to think of some creative ways to earn money- can you mow lawns or do yard work? Raking leaves, etc- especially in the fall may be good. Also, snow removal. Get that shovel out! Ask around business in your neighborhood to see if they would hire you with a work permit. You will need transportation, too. You will need to keep that in mind. Look in the Sunday classifieds- probably under General Labor or something like that. See what is available- that will give you an idea of the qualifications, etc. When my brothers were younger (in the 70s) they caddied at golf courses. I don't know if this done anymore since most golfers carry their clubs or take carts. My friend's son works at a grocery store bagging groceries and gathering shopping carts. He has a work permit. Also- try moving companies. If you're strong and don't mind heavy lifting, maybe you can ask around for jobs there. A lot of people move in the summer and on the weekends. I hope these ideas help you. Good luck.
13 :
How about starting a DJ'ing business? Depending on the area you are at, you can make $400-$1200 a night doing it. Usually, you are DJ'ing a dance or a wedding so it's 4-6 hours of work. You need to get a professional sound system and a CD collection, but if you keep with it, you can do this year round and probably take it to college and help pay your way through school. Just understand that your Friday and Saturday nights will be shot if you do it. You can hire a friend to help out. I'm guessing here, but it may cost you $10k+ to get started.
14 :
Dog poop scooping. Hands down, it's the easiest and best small business for a whippersnapper. Hardly any materials: bucket garbage bags some sort of scooper gloves so you have low start-up costs. People are willing to pay whatever the market will bear. In urban areas, some people pay $10/week to have their yards scooped. Even if you charged $5 per yard, it's up to you how many clients you can wrangle. Give it a shot. I've read news stories where a guy got outsourced to India or something, so instead of doing high-tech stuff, he scooped poop, and was making more money than he was as a tech monkey.

About can an American with an associates' paralegal degree work in Canada

Can an American with an associates' paralegal degree work in Canada? What do I need to do to find work there?
I will be graduating with my associates' degree in July. I am looking for work away from where I live (Pittsburgh, PA). I went to Toronto last year and fell in love. I understand there is a high cost of living, but I want to see if it would be possible to move there. A few questions: 1) Do Canadian law firms hire entry-level paralegals with American associates' degrees? 2) How hard it is to find a paralegal/legal assistant job in Toronto? 3) How much would I have to earn in order to live? I am single and don't drink or drive. Please provide figures in Canadian and American dollars. 4) Do I need to have my credentials assessed? 5) Would knowledge of American law be advantageous? 6) Would I need to learn the Canadian legal system before I could find work?
