How does the spread point work in betting?
Like for example if I bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers who are -3 against the Chicago Bears and if I bet on New York Giants who are +3 against the cowboys.

San Francisco -5 vs. St. Louis 41 You may look at that and be intimidated and feel helpless, but I’m going to decode this little bugger for you. This is the betting line…not the odds. The odds are what you are going to be paid (covered later). When ever you see a team with a (-) number next to them (-5 in this case) that means that team is favored to win by that margin…5 points. The number after the matchup (41) is the projected total points to be scored by both teams added together. So there are two options here. A player can choose to bet on the matchup either San Fran -5 points, or St. Louis +5 points. For the player who wagers on San Francisco -5, San Fran must win by more than 5 points for this to be a winning wager. For the player who wagers on St. Louis +5, they must either win the game, or lose by less than 5 points for this to be a winning wager. If the outcome falls on the number, either way, the bet is declared a “Pushâ€, and your original stake is refunded. See, that wasn’t too difficult was it? Sometimes you will see the points displayed as half numbers like San Fran -5.5 If you bet on San Fran and they win by 6..you win. If they win by 5 or less…you lose. Clear? If you bet Steelers -3, then the Steelers MUST win by MORE than 3 points for you to win your bet. If the Steelers win by exactly 3, then you get a push. (You don't win or lose.) If the Steelers win by only 1 point or by 2 points, OR if the Steelers lose or tie the game, then you LOSE. Similarly with Giants +3. Now, however, if the Giants LOSE the game by exactly 3 points, you get a push. If the Giants win the game, you win. OR the Giants could LOSE the game by 1 point, or LOSE the game by 2 points and you would still WIN your bet. The only way you can lose that Giants +3 bet is if the Giants lose by 4 points or more.

Very easy to answer. Don't remember any of these rules. Listen. If the Cowboys are -3, then its simple. Take the final score of the game (For example) Cowboys: 24 Steelers: 22 And with the final score, you simply do what the point spread says to do. Since the Steelers say -3, then you subtract 3. Simple. The new score is now: Cowboys: 21 Steelers: 22 The Steelers won the game in the eyes of the bet you made, and you would lose your bet. If the adjusted score would of made it a tie ball game, then you would simply get your bet back, and it would be like no bet was ever made. And of course, if the Steelers still had a higher score after you adjusted it, you would win your bet and make money.
